The Aral Sea disaster is an infinite sorrow of the mankind. There are only few pages in the modern history of the Aral Sea that are not filled with suffering and regrets. Ecological, economic and humanitarian crisis of Aral cannot be considered only the national or a regional challenge. In the modern history we have not had a chance to solve such an enormous and scaled problem. Still we have an opportunity to develop mechanisms and technologies based on the lessons learned from the Aral crisis to respond to the present and future challenges for the sake of the generations yet to come to this world.

The Fund is established with an aim to support recovery of the Aral Sea region after the implications of the ecological disaster. Fund’s activities are wider than just health and biodiversity issues expanding to education, income generation, enhancement of living standards, social mobilization, natural resource management, innovations, conservation of the historic and cultural heritage, etc.

This explains the Fund’s vision and approach to the set of problems faced by the region. Environmental problems are not considered separately from health or population’s wellbeing since they are closely connected with each other and require cross-sectoral approaches and solutions. Consequently, this urges to more effective coordination and partnership between donors and the Government to avoid overlapping and waste of resources.

Fund’s procedures assume partnership and cooperation with international organizations, government agencies, NGOs and analytical institutions while ensuring the most effective operational modality and observance of the interests of all the parties involved. This allows mobilization of available resources and new vision of the Aral Sea not as the sticking point in the Central Asian region but a unique model of cooperation that yet to be realized saving millions of people’s lives and justifying unquenchable hope.
